The Allegheny Chinquapin nuts' appearance is much like ordinary chestnut seeds, but are somewhat smaller. Some chinquapin trees growing in the Appalachian Mountains near North Carolina and Tennessee grow as tall as 30 feet. The harvest time for Allegheny Chinquapin nuts is during the early Fall. The Allegheny Chinquapin trees grow in most Southern States, from Florida through Carolina and North and into New Jersey and PA. The nut kernels of the Chinquapin trees are protected by a sharp encasing which begins to split open when the nuts ripens. The flowers of the Allegheny Chestnut tree are white tubular blooms about 6 inches long and slightly fragrant.
